If +EV is the goal, line shopping is the cheapest, most reliable way to get there. It's dead simple: before you place a bet, check several sportsbooks and take the best available price for the exact bet you want. That's it. No model, no handicapping — just refusing to leave money on the table. It's the one habit that turns a break-even bettor into a winning one.
Why a few cents matters so much
Betting margins are razor thin. The standard −110 price already means you're paying 4.8% of vig. If one book has your side at −105 and another at −115, that gap is enormous relative to your edge.
You bet the same side all season. Book A consistently prices it −115 (implied 53.5%); Book B prices it −105 (implied 51.2%). You need to win ~53.5% at Book A just to break even, but only ~51.2% at Book B.
That ~2.3% difference is often larger than the entire edge a good bettor has. Taking the worse number can flip a winning strategy into a losing one — without you ever picking a different game.
It compounds on every single bet
Line shopping isn't a once-in-a-while windfall; it's a small tax cut on everything you bet. A bettor who averages even 5–10 cents better per wager over hundreds of bets a season adds points of ROI that dwarf most people's handicapping edge. Studies of long-term bettors consistently show that getting the best number is more predictive of profit than picking the "right" side.
How to actually do it
- Have multiple accounts. You can't take the best price if you only have one book. Three to six is plenty for most people.
- Compare the exact bet. Same team, same market, same line. A −110 on a −2.5 spread isn't comparable to −110 on −3.
- Watch alternate lines and half-points. Buying or catching a key number (3 and 7 in the NFL especially) can be worth more than the price itself.
- Use a tool. Manually opening six apps for every bet is slow. An odds screen that shows the best price per side across books does this in one glance.
The "best" price is only a real edge if it's a legitimate market. A single book hanging a wild outlier while everyone else agrees isn't a gift — it's often a stale or about-to-move line. Best price within a healthy, consensus market is the edge.
