ODDS PIRANHARound 1: all 8 hitters, 20 swings each (misses count). Top four advance.
Round 2 & Finals: 15 swings per round. Homer on your final swing and you keep hitting until you make an out.
Tiebreakers: Round 1 ties decided by longest homer. Round 2/Final ties go to successive 3-swing swing-offs.
Model notes: the swing cap kills the cardio factor that buried older hitters in timed derbies — a big boost for the 33-year-old Phillies duo. The Round 1 distance tiebreaker is a hidden asset for the biggest raw-power guys. And Citizens Bank Park's 330-ft right-field line is a BP target for all five left-handed hitters.
The MLB home run leader, in his home park, with a swing built for this event — Schwarber hit 55 homers in the 2018 Derby and lost anyway to a walk-off. His grooved lift-and-pull BP stroke aimed at a 330-ft porch makes him the deserving favorite, and the swing-cap format erases the stamina concerns of a timed derby at 33. The market agrees he's the favorite but still prices him too long.
Last year's runner-up at just 22, with some of the fastest bat speed in baseball and 28 homers this season. He's the only hitter besides the Phillies pair who has proven he can pace a derby, and right-handed power plays fine at CBP — he clears any wall by 40 feet. Kalshi's +567 is the class of the board on him.
The rookie sensation hit 56 homers in an NPB Triple Crown season and his batting-practice shows are already famous in Chicago. Left-handed loft aimed at the porch, zero derby mileage on the swing, and the 20-swing cap protects a first-timer from pacing mistakes. Live longshot — but the books already know it; the price is a touch short of fair.
The lowest season total in the field (14) hides the loudest contact — Caglianone is tied for the MLB lead in average home run distance and hit 9 of his 14 in June. That matters here: Round 1 ties are broken by longest homer, which is effectively a free half-advance for the biggest hitter. 6'4", 250, lefty, at this park: the tools are a perfect fit even if the resume is thin.
The only past champion in the field — and he won it at home in DC in 2018, beating Schwarber at the buzzer. The season power is down (20 HR) and he's 33, but the Derby is a grooved-swing contest, Harper is one of the great BP hitters of his generation, and the swing-cap format is friendlier to him than any timed edition. The hometown-repeat story at +900 is worth a small sprinkle.
The breakout is real — 22 homers with monster raw power at 250 pounds. But he's a derby rookie, right-handed in a park whose short side is in right, and his game power comes on a flatter plane than the launch-everything swing this event rewards. The books are pricing the name and the breakout; the model says +700 is two bets short of fair. Most overpriced hitter on the board.
Third in MLB in homers, lefty, and completely unproven in this format. Rice's power is legit but it plays as hard line drives that carry out, not the towering pull-side moonshots that stack derby homers efficiently — flatter BP arcs cost swings in a 20-swing round. Polymarket's +1011 is exactly fair per the model. No edge either way.
A 20-homer season at 34 is a nice story, but Contreras owns the lowest raw-power ceiling in the field, bats right-handed at a lefty's park, and has never swung in a derby. The oldest hitter in the field benefits from the swing cap like the Phillies do — he just starts from a lower floor. Kalshi's +2400 prices him correctly. Pass.
Win probabilities blend 2026 in-game HR production, raw-power indicators (average HR distance, size/bat speed), handedness fit to Citizens Bank Park (330-ft RF line), derby track record, and format fit under the 2026 swing-cap rules (20 swings R1 / top 4 advance / 15 swings after, longest-HR tiebreak in R1). Probabilities are subjective model estimates that sum to 100%.
+EV flags compare model probability to the best line-shopped price across Kalshi, Polymarket, Novig, Caesars, FanDuel, and DraftKings (as of July 12–13). Best-price overround is ≈98.7%, so genuine edges can exist if the model is right. EV% = (model win probability × decimal odds) − 1.
Plays: Schwarber +378 (Polymarket) · Caminero +567 (Kalshi) · small: Harper +900 (Caesars). Fade: Walker at +700.
